H. R. 2546 Must Never See the Light of Day!

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Carolyn B Maloney, a liberal from New York, introduced a bill, H. R. 2546 titled “Firearm Risk Protection Act of 2015”. This bill requires that gun owners and would be gun owners purchase liability insurance before they can purchase or receive a firearm. This bill could possibly prevent all law-abiding Americans from owning a firearm.

I’m sure the idea for mandatory insurance came from the anti-gun organizations comparing gun ownership to owning a car. This comparison is ridiculous as firearm ownership is a RIGHT and driving a car is a privilege! However, when is a matter of constitutionality even considered by rabid anti-gun activists?

Take a quick look at the bill, particularly the “A” section below:

“(2) In paragraph (1), the term ‘qualified liability insurance policy’ means, with respect to the purchaser of a firearm, a policy that—

“(A) provides liability insurance covering the purchaser specifically for losses resulting from use of the firearm while it is owned by the purchaser; and

“(B) is issued by an insurer licensed or authorized to provide the coverage by the State insurance regulatory authority for the State in which the purchaser resides.”.

There is absolutely no limit on liability which means that any insurer would be responsible for paying off outlandish multi-million dollar lawsuits. If any insurance company were to provide such coverage, the premiums could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, preventing most law-abiding citizens from owning a firearm.

In section “B” (displayed above) the word “authorized” puts decisions of who can provide insurance in the hands of non-elected regulators who report to no one but themselves and the politicians who helped appoint them. They could easily prevent cooperatives made up of citizens from self-insuring the members of the group. The now-dreaded Obamacare allowed for non-government cooperatives and even religious groups to provide coverage.

So, grab a cup of Java (or a latte if that’s what you prefer) and contact Congressman Bob Goodlatte who is Chairman of the United States House of Representatives Judiciary Committee. Tell him to protect our Rights as Citizens of the United States from being infringed by backdoor legislative schemes such as H. R. 2546. Ask him to make sure this bill never sees the light of day!
