HR 4909 STOP School Violence Act of 2018 Actually Makes Schools More Dangerous

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

HR 4909 actually makes schools less safe and will probably create more violence. This piece of misguided legislation even has some congressmen that are usually pro-Second Amendment jumping to the gun control side.

Let’s look at this legislation and pay close attention to the violence it actually creates, encouraging such behavior.

HR 4909 does away with metal detectors and “other deterrent measures.” This eliminates any preventive effect that metal detectors and other deterrent measures provide. It will also embolden people to commit violent acts when they know they can sneak a knife, gun or other weapon into the school.

It replaces metal detectors and preventative measures with “evidence-based training.” We know from past experience, all government firearm legislation relies mainly on “evidence” from studies of gun control groups whose agenda is the elimination of the Second Amendment.

Section 2.1.A.ii

by striking “including the placement and use of metal detectors and other deterrent measures” and inserting “through evidence-based training and technical assistance to prevent violence”

We read accounts of SWAT teams busting down doors of innocent and unsuspecting families as part of student and bad neighbor pranks. This has resulted with at least one death and the emotional scarring of many families, especially their children.

HR 4909 makes SWAT-ing more tempting by setting up totally anonymous systems subject to abuse by miscreants. If your identity is hidden, there can be no follow-up or investigation into the claims and the prankster or criminal for that matter. There is no more deterrent and it will result in more violence and deaths.

Section 2.1.B.i

The development and operation of anonymous reporting systems for threats of school violence, including mobile telephone applications, hotlines, and internet websites.

Gun Control

HR 4909 provides a substantial increase in funds through subgrants that may be used by gun control groups. Notice that “nonprofit organizations” are included in these grants. Nonprofits like Everytown for Gun Safety and the Brady Campaign would be able to get grants for lobbying and biased “studies” meant to gut the Second Amendment.

Subgrants to State or local law enforcement agencies, schools, school districts, nonprofit organizations, or Indian tribal organizations to implement grants awarded under this section.

As of this writing the bill sits in the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations. Visit the bill site to track the latest action on HR 4909 and urge the legislators and committees to kill this bill.
